Avalanche crown from mid-June slide below the ridge south of Paintbrush Divide, looking west. Ranger measured the crown at ten feet high by standing against it and putting his hiking pole on his head. The debris pile was 25 feet deep:

These photos were shot August 6, 2009, from from cabin 5 except the first. The storm was longer than many in summer, starting in early afternoon as is frequently the case, but lasting longer than two hours. The same spot on the Grand got hit repeatedly (6-7 times in one two-second span). Hail toward the end–about 4:20–came up to near golf-ball size.
